This Saturday, June 14, if you haven’t already, make plans to attend the West Kootenay/Boundary Move to Cure ALS at Gyro Park in Trail.
For the first time, this event is inviting people from across the West Kootenay and Boundary. That’s over fifteen communities! Come and connect and find support, for you do not walk alone.
The Move to Cure ALS is the annual signature fundraising event for the ALS Society of British Columbia held throughout June which is ALS Awareness Month in Canada. The goal? To end ALS through creating a world-class ALS Centre at UBC. 100% net proceeds to the ALS Society of British Columbia will remain in BC to support patient services programs and research.
“Our goal is to raise awareness about ALS and the signs and symptoms as well as raising funds,” co-organizer Helen Bobbitt said.
“It tends to be a process of elimination in diagnosing ALS and that is heartbreaking when you think that there could be a potential shortened timeline from the time a person finds out. There are also others waiting on an ALS diagnosis and it is a game of time. A game of how time can be shared and spent.”
There are other events in Trail that day including a car show and the Farmers Market. Helen hopes it can be a busy and full day so everyone can enjoy, well, everything.
“Our day is much more than the walk – it will feature music, guest speakers, facepainting, a BBQ, the in-person Ice Bucket Challenge and for those who donate, names will be entered into one of our great prize draws.”
“Registration is from 9:30-12 and music on the stage at 10:45 am. The walk will take place at 12:30 and participants are invited to stay until our event finishes at 3:30 pm. What a great way to celebrate our dads too because Father’s Day is Sunday!”
Fruitvale’s Wendy Marten shares why she became involved in this event.
“I’m moving for my son, Lee and for everyone else who is dealing with an ALS diagnosis. This diagnosis has had a huge impact on not only Lee, but our entire family. It is a diagnosis no family ever wants to hear, and we were devastated. We think it is Important to not let the disease define us, or to take away our moments of happiness. We must try to find joy in every day. It is very difficult though. I would like to say that you are not alone.” said Wendy.
“ALS BC is an amazing resource for families dealing with this diagnosis. I also try to lean on family and friends as much as possible. I would love to see as many people as possible come out to this event. You never know when you or someone you love may be impacted by this disease. It is so important to bring awareness and raise funds to help ALS BC continue to provide supports and to find a cure for ALS.”
Be dressed for the weather, be ready to walk for up to an hour to support ALS BC and bring your towels and a change of a shirt if you are doing the Ice Bucket Challenge and your chairs and tents if you want to stay the day! Please ensure your tents have weights so we have a safe site.
