Vandalism plagues Trail

“We’re having trouble keeping up with the amount of vandalism.”

That’s the message from Trail’s Grounds and Roads Manager to city council.

Josh Conci said the problem is escalating along with the foot traffic heading downtown.

“The walking bridge and then through the Rotary (Park) downtown is kind of the new highway down there,” he explained.

“Our benches are getting lit on fire down there quite a bit, the approaches on each side of the bridge are getting tagged (painted with graffiti) so that is a high traffic route now and steadily the instances are going up,” Conci added.

The latest instance of vandalism includes another fire in the Gazebo.

“And with that, I think at least three, possibly four fires in that gazebo now, the last one being most significant, actually taking away from the structure itself,” Conci told council, adding that the joists need to be repaired following the latest blaze.

The Grounds and Roads Manager wondered if the structure should be taken down or moved before its burned down completely.

“It’s a matter of time as to when the fire department can’t get there quick enough,” Conci said.

He also reported that the city needs to order specialized paint to deal with the walking bridge graffiti, because of rules related to any structure that is above water.
