The City of Castlegar has appointed Nick Ahlefeld to serve as Acting Fire Chief following the retirement of Chief Sam Lattanzio.
Ahlefeld has served as Deputy Fire Chief since 2017 and was a paid-on-call volunteer with the Castlegar Fire Department for 10 years prior to that.
The City says he brings an extensive background in fire services, emergency response, and leadership to the role. His appointment ensures a smooth transition and supports continuity within the department as the City reviews its current and future leadership needs.
“It’s an honour to take on this role and continue serving the community alongside an incredible team,” said Acting Fire Chief Nick Ahlefeld.
“I look forward to building on the strong foundation already in place and continuing to provide high-quality fire protection and emergency services to Castlegar.”
“The safety and well-being of Castlegar residents is our top priority, and Nick’s experience in emergency response and fire services within our community will help ensure that the high level of service built by outgoing Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio is maintained,” said Mayor Maria McFaddin.
“We thank Chief Lattanzio for his decades of service to the community and wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.”
The City extends its gratitude to Chief Lattanzio for more than 30 years of dedicated fire service, including over 10 years with the City of Castlegar.
