With the tariffs officially imposed by the United States, the BC government is announcing changes.
In a statement responding to the news, Premier David Eby has announced all red-state liquor products will be removed from BC Liquor stores, the government and crown corporations will buy Canadian products first, and businesses will get support to pivot to domestic and global markets.
He says with the tariffs imposed, the relationship between Canada and the United States has been betrayed.
“When the President raised the issue of tariffs, he said it was about Fentanyl and the border, and Canada and all the provinces worked together to respond to his demands in good faith if that was really what this is about,” said Eby.
“I would say the demands were met and yet it did not matter, it didn’t work because it’s about something else. He wants to make Canada the 51st state.”
Eby says they didn’t ask for this fight, but they won’t shrink from it.
Following the tariffs being imposed at midnight today, Canada responded with their own tariffs, imposing $30 billion in duties on U.S. goods, with an extra $125 billion threatened to be imposed next month.
As the trade war runs, Eby encourages you to buy BC or Canadian products while shopping, and to travel to Canada or anywhere else in the world that isn’t the US.
“This threat to our sovereignty has brought out a sense of pride, a sense of courage and a sense of solidarity among all Canadians.”
