Carbon monoxide claims life in Castlegar

A carbon monoxide leak at a Castlegar residence on Monday morning has claimed the life of one individual.

A media release from Castlegar Fire Rescue says crews were dispatched to a Hazmat response in the 3400 block of 4th Avenue at 10:02 a.m. on February 24.

Upon arrival, RCMP were already on the scene and told fire crews that a gas smell was present.

CFD entered and recovered one deceased male from the upper level. They rescued a second man from the basement and a cat.

The fire service says there were high levels of carbon monoxide present inside the residence.

Once the scene was made safe, command was transferred to the RCMP.

The RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are continuing the investigation.
