RDKB issues Atmospheric River Alert

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is activating the regional emergency operations centre to a level one this weekend due to the arrival of an atmospheric river.

The RDKB says rising temperatures and significant rainfall may result in pooling water and rising watercourses.

“In accordance with our Flood Response Plan, we are in an Enhanced Awareness stage,” says Mark Stephens, the RDKB’s Manager of Emergency Programs.

“We are closely monitoring the incoming storm and working with our municipal partners to ensure a state of readiness,” added Stephens.

Residents are encouraged to remove ice from downspouts, clear neighbourhood culverts, and monitor catch basins. People are urged to stay clear of rising creeks, streams and rivers as well.

The RDKB will update residents as needed.

Residents are urged to sign up for the RDKB’s Emergency Alerting System – Voyent Alert – on the RDKB’s emergency website.

If and when an emergency occurs, the RDKB will keep everyone updated through its website and its social media channels on Facebook (Meta), Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).
