Parents rally to save Russian Language Program

Castlegar parents are rallying their support to keep Canada’s only Russian Language and Culture Program (RLC) going.

Parent Tasha Kanigan says the program is at threat of closing following low enrollment numbers and financial considerations.

“This program has been in existence since the early 80’s and it’s really brought that cultural and language exposure to children within the Kootenay area for that long and so we really like to highlight its immense value and the richness of the experience that kids in this program get.”

“It would be amazing to see it continue and to have that opportunity to really increase the numbers and have people understand what the purpose of the program is and how much it enriches children’s lives and educational experiences.”

Kanigan is urging parents interested in Castlegar’s Russian Language and Culture program as an education pathway for their children to enroll now.

“If your child is entering kindergarten in the Castlegar area, anywhere between Genelle, Robson, Ootishenia, up to the junction, if you are interested in offering your child a diverse cultural and language experience to really consider signing them up for the Russian Language and Culture Program, it’s an English curriculum with language and culture exposure.”

“You don’t need to be somebody who is fluent in any kind of language but just want to have your child be exposed to language and culture and the rich history that exists in the Kootenay area with the Doukhobor community as well.”

Looking for more information? A public information session will take place at Castlegar Primary/Twin Rivers Elementary School on February 25 at 6pm, or you can visit the School District 20 (SD20) website for information and registration details.

Enrolment is open to students in all catchments, with bus transportation available.
