A skier was rescued 500 meters outside the boundary line at Red Mountain over the weekend, prompting calls for resort users to stay within the lines or face the consequences.
Trail RCMP receive the call just after 5pm on on Saturday, February 15, after a skier was reported lost and required rescuing after intentionally skiing outside the marked mountain boundaries at the local Rossland hill.
Red Mountain ski patrol located the man before RCMP and Search and Rescue (SAR) could respond to assist and is believed not to have suffered injury from his actions.
However, his actions have prompted the reminder of safety when participating in snow sports.
“The backcountry is a dangerous place there’s a lot of hazards including avalanches. So, unless you’re fully prepared to spend a night out in the backcountry, my suggestion is that you don’t go.” said Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
“Please stay within the boundaries of the ski resort. Backcountry skiing involves greater risks that resort skiing especially if your adventure is not planned out carefully. If you ski out-of-bounds at a resort, you may lose your ski pass privileges and access to the mountain, or worse, your life, if you are not prepared for the risks.”
