Before you strike another match, check your candles.
Health Canada is recalling over 12,000 Maison Lavande candles for flames that are burning a little too brightly for comfort.
Four scented candles sold between May 1 and November 24 are affected, including:
- Amber, Vanilla & Lavender
- Eucalyptus Wood & Lavender
- Grapefruit & Lavender
- Cedar & Lavender
Fire Rescue Service Assistant Chief Rick Maida recommends looking at all the candles in your home and then checking the Health Canada website to see if they match any that have been recalled. If so, he says you should dispose of them right away.
“The problem with these candles is that the flames can reach abnormally high levels, which obviously is a risk if you have anything combustible or flammable around the candles. It can start a fire in your home.”
The Canadian Fire Association recommends keeping all candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn, with Maida noting people should also ensure they’re buying candles from reputable companies.
“If you are going to use them, you know, be responsible with them. Always make sure that there’s a good buffer around them—an area with no combustibles nearby—so that you don’t risk starting a fire. Also, make sure you’re buying candles from reputable companies that meet all the Canadian standards.”
