More funding available to increase wheelchair accessible taxis

The provincial government is releasing more funding to increase the number of wheelchair-accessible taxis in BC.

The third round of funding for the Passenger Transportation Accessibility Program is now underway to assist taxi operators buy and maintain wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

BC developed the PTAP program in 2022 to increase the number of accessible taxis by offsetting costs for taxi companies and owner-operators.

The program partially subsidizes costs for vehicle maintenance, converting an existing vehicle, buying a converted vehicle, or purchasing a new vehicle and converting it.

Rebates are also available to offset the higher costs of fuel and insurance.

Unlike ride-hailing companies, taxi companies are required under their operating licence to have a portion of their fleet wheelchair accessible.
