Memorial march for Lindsay Danchella being held in Trail on Thursday

Trail residents are invited to a memorial march on Thursday in honour of Lindsay Danchella.

Organized by the BC Nurses’ Union, the march will begin at 5 p.m. in front of the Trail & District Public Library before making its way through the downtown core, followed by speeches and a call to action.

“The walk is being held in honour of Lindsay Danchella, a young woman who tragically lost her life to domestic violence. The walk is not only a tribute to her memory, but it’s also a community call to action to raise awareness about the devastating impacts of domestic violence and the need to support those who are affected,” said Trail Mayor Colleen Jones.

The march coincides with the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, held annually on December 6. Jones says the community chose to highlight Danchella’s death in their call for action and change.

“Our community is still grieving over this. We’re hoping to provide a little bit of closure. I don’t think we can ever have closure on domestic violence, but this march is a great opportunity to shed more light on these tragedies and ensure we work hard and do what we need to do so that it doesn’t happen again.”

The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is held each year to mark the anniversary of the 1989 massacre at Montreal’s École Polytechnique, where 14 women were murdered simply for being women.
