Severe storm could hit the Kootenays Wednesday

Kootenay residents may want to batten down the hatches as a thunderstorm with heavy wind gusts is expected to hit the region today, Wednesday September 25.

Environment Canada says the storm could hit on Wednesday night in, particularly in Creston and further east.

There is the potential for very strong wind gusts leading to broken tree limbs and power outages.

Thunderstorms could also develop bringing heavy downpours of rain.

The downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roadways and residents are advised to look out for washouts along rivers and creeks.

Environment Canada warns that damage to buildings such as windows and shingles may occur.

East Kootenay experienced a similar situation last month after a severe storm ripped through the Columbia Valley, which led to widespread downed trees and power outages and local communities have still been cleaning up.
