Castlegar and Trail property tax deadline is next week

Property taxes in Trail and Castlegar are due on July 2.

To avoid a 10 per cent penalty fee, property owners should ensure the payment is made on time or the fee will be automatically applied.

Castlegar

The City of Castlegar approved a 6.43 per cent tax increase for residential properties this year, and a 6.70 per cent increase for business and light industrial properties.

Payment can be made in the following ways:

  • In person or online through your financial institution
  • Deposit a cheque in the drop box at City Hall
  • Mail a cheque to City Hall
  • Cash, cheque, or debit at City Hall
  • Online via credit card

Eligible property owners should also make sure they’ve applied for their homeowner grant, which is a provincial subsidy that reduces the amount of property tax paid for principal residences.

Applications must be submitted by July 2 to ensure that the reduction is reflected on their account.

The City of Castlegar has adopted a pre-authorized payment plan option for next year’s property taxes.

This will provide residents who sign up the opportunity to pay their taxes in 10 equal payments.

The City said when property taxes are billed next May, those who signed up will have a pre-paid balance which will be used to offset the property taxes owing.

Trail

In Trail, a 4.25 per cent increase was approved.

A 10 per cent penalty will be automatically applied to late payments and unclaimed homeowner grants after the deadline.

Payments can be made using online banking or in person at City Hall via cash, cheque, debit, or credit. In-person payments at City Hall must be made by 3:30 p.m. on July 2.

The City of Trail is also exploring introducing a payment instalment model in the coming months, according to City Manager Colin McClure, but nothing has been announced yet.
