City of Castlegar property taxes due July 2

Castlegar homeowners should be receiving their property tax notices soon, and they must be paid by July 2 to avoid a 10 per cent penalty.

In December, Castlegar City Councillors approved a 6.43 per cent tax increase for residential properties and 6.70 per cent for business and light industrial properties for the 2024 budget.

This equates to $83.89 annually, or approximately $6.99 per month, for the City portion on an average single-detached home tax bill in Castlegar.

City taxes are only one portion of a property tax bill, which also includes amounts the City collects on behalf of the Province of British Columbia, the Regional District, and school and library levies.

All property taxes are due on July 2, 2024, and residents are encouraged to pay on time to avoid a 10 per cent penalty, which is automatically applied to unpaid taxes after the deadline.

Payment can be made in the following ways:

  • In person or online through your financial institution
  • Deposit a cheque in the drop box at City Hall
  • Mail a cheque to City Hall
  • Cash, cheque, or debit at City Hall
  • Online via credit card at castlegar.ca/pay-online

Additionally, the City is encouraging eligible homeowners to apply for their homeowner grant, a provincial subsidy that reduces the amount of property tax paid for principal residences, on time to ensure that the reduction is reflected on their account.

In 2021, the Province of B.C. centralized the administration of the homeowner grant, and all homeowners must apply directly to the Province. The City cannot accept applications but has provided information on the 2023 Property Tax notices.

For more information about the process and how to apply, call 1.888.355.2700 or visit the BC Governments website.
