The Kootenay’s Travis Green has landed himself a new coaching gig in the NHL, this time as head coach of the Ottawa Senators.
Green was born in Castlegar and played for the Rebels in the 1985/86 season before moving on to the WHL.
The Senators have given him a contract that runs until the end of the 2027/28 season.
“After speaking to several highly qualified candidates, it became clear that Travis is the right fit to lead our group,” said president of hockey operations and GM Steve Staios.
“As we’ve routinely stated, developing a winning culture is paramount to our aspiration of achieving sustained success. Travis has a burning desire to win, is passionate about teaching and holds his players to a very high standard.”
Green spent last season as an associate coach for the New Jersey Devils.
He was previously the head coach of the Vancouver Canucks from 2017 to 2022.
In his first media availability with his new team, Green said he relishes the opportunity to coach in Canada.
“I come here and I know what it means to coach in Canada. I know how bad the people in Ottawa want to win. I’m going to make this team into a winning team and be a team they can be proud of,” Green added.
“Hockey is Canada. It’s a privilege to coach in Canada, to play in Canada, and there’s something to be said for winning in Canada. There is pressure and I like that and that was another box that got checked.”
The Ottawa Senators had a disappointing season finishing with a 37-41-4 record.
They fired their previous head coach back in December.
