NextGen Transit looses West Kootenay contract

BC Transit has given the contract for the West Kootenay Transit System to PWTransit, after operating through Trail’s NextGen Transit for over 40 years.

NextGen, formerly known as Trail Transit, had held the West Kootenay Transit contract since 1982. PWTransit is scheduled to take over on April 1, according to a media release from BC Transit.

The base contract is for five years with allowable extensions to nine.

BC Transit said in the release that the company change should not impact transit service in the region and that all unionized NextGen Transit employees working in public transit will be offered similar roles with PWTransit.

PWTransit Canada was awarded the contract through BC Transit’s standard procurement process, according to the release.

The contract includes conventional and paratransit service in the West Kootenay Region, which serves several communities, including Trail, Castlegar, and the Boundary Transit System (Grand Forks).
