Trail woman back on solid ground

RCMP say a 28-year-old Trail woman didn’t appreciate attempts to prevent her from falling off a high support beam and onto the river bank.

They were called Sunday afternoon to a report of the woman unconscious on the concrete beam suspended above the ground near Jubilee Park.

First responders worried the woman might roll over and land on the rocks below. Police say as firefighters prepared to rescue her, she woke up and started to scold emergency personnel for embarrassing her.

She got off the beam herself and started to walk away, but a police officer stopped her to discuss how her actions had led to a waste of important resources.

RCMP and firefighters have recommended that the City of Trail put measures in place to prevent access to the support beam.

‘I can scream until till 11 p.m.’

At 6 a.m. on the same day police received a report of a 37-year-old Castlegar man screaming in the parking lot of a business in the 1000 block of Rossland Avenue.

An officer nearby heard the man yelling and witnesses said he had also been running in traffic.

When the officer located the man, he noted the man appeared to be drunk and discovered several empties in the area. While the officer tried to talk to the man, it didn’t go well.

“The man was indignant and informed the officer that he could continue screaming until 11 p.m.,” Sgt. Mike Wicentowich said.

“The officer explained to him that he was mistaken. However, the man declined to listen to the officer and continue his boisterous public theatrics.”

The man was arrested for being drunk in public and causing a disturbance, but wouldn’t go quietly. He was jailed until he sobered up.

“It is possible to get in trouble at any hour of the day,” Wicentowich said. “There are no time limits.”

Bear encounters on the rise

Trail RCMP and the BC Conservation Officer Service have been responding to increased encounters with bears. Police say as the summer winds down, and animals continuing to search for food, encounters in populated areas will be more frequent.
