The City of Rossland will be asking residents to do more to conserve water starting next week.
As of Aug. 31, Stage 3 restrictions will be in place. That means watering lawns with sprinklers is prohibited. Hand watering and drip and micro irrigation is allowed between 7 and 9 a.m. and 7 and 9 p.m. Cars can be washed by hand for health and safety purposes only. Outdoor pools, hot tubs, and decorative fountains can’t be filled.
There are no restrictions on watering vegetable gardens and fruit trees for personal use.
The city says it’s a “proactive measure to ensure there is plenty of water available to fight a wildfire” given the extreme fire danger in the region.
“Costly upgrades to our infrastructure can be deferred through minimizing our potable water use, as well as reducing costs associated with water treatment and pumping,” the city said.
