The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary says bins for its curbside organics collection program will appear on doorsteps between Aug. 7 and 24.
Residents in Rossland, Warfield, Trail, Montrose, Fruitvale, and Areas A and B will receive the bins. However, collection won’t officially launch until Oct. 2.
“This is an exciting moment for West Kootenay residents,” RDKB environmental communications and programs co-ordinator B.A. Belton said in a news release.
“The delivery of the green bins marks the beginning of a positive change in how we handle waste within this area.”
Contained inside will be a kitchen tote, sample liners, and information needed to get started when the program begins.
The RDKB will also be introducing a bear bin trade-in program this September, allowing residents to trade their 80-litre critter-resistant bin for a bear-resistant one at a cost of $200.
A set number of bear-resistant bins have been set aside on a first-come, first-serve basis to each municipality and electoral area until Dec. 31.
“Embracing the green bin program is not only a momentous step for our community but also a giant leap towards our goal of becoming a carbon-neutral local government,” RDKB board chair Linda Worley said.
“I am thrilled to see residents join us in this important endeavor. By diverting organic waste from our landfills, we are not only extending the life of the McKelvey Creek landfill but also making a significant impact in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“I wholeheartedly support this initiative, knowing that together, we are creating a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for generations to come.”
No plastics are accepted in the green bins, even if they claim to be compostable or biodegradable. Yard or garden waste should also be kept out.
