UPDATED: Ambulance crashes near Rossland

Trail RCMP say there were no major injuries after an ambulance went off the road near Rossland.

The incident was reported on June 23 in the 4300 block of Highway 3B.

Police say the 30-year-old Grand Forks man driving the ambulance fell asleep behind the wheel. He wasn’t hurt, but his passenger, a 50-year-old Midway woman, suffered minor injuries.

Two people being transported weren’t hurt. The ambulance suffered minor damage. RCMP notified BC Emergency Health Services about the incident.

BCEHS said there an internal investigation is underway. It said the call about the crash came at 3:39 p.m. and at the time the ambulance was transporting a patient between hospitals, along with a family escort.

Two other ambulances responded and transported the patient, two paramedics, and the escort to hospital as a precaution, and for follow up. A replacement ambulance was put into service. BCEHS said staffing and service levels in Grand Forks have not been affected.

(CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story said both of the people being transported were patients.)
