Trail RCMP continue to investigate after the recovery of three stolen vehicles in separate incidents.
Last Tuesday, a black 2008 Ford Focus was swiped overnight from a home in the 400 block of Rossland Avenue and later discovered near Violin Lake Road.
Then on Friday evening, a truck was reported stolen from a home on Ritchie Avenue.
Soon after, someone called police to report the truck driving erratically northbound on Highway 22. The witness followed the truck to Genelle and saw a man park it and get out with two passengers.
An officer recovered the truck and detained and identified a 31-year-old man suspected to have stolen it. The truck was towed and examined by a forensic team.
A vehicle stolen from Nelson was also recovered in Trail over the weekend.
Police are urging you to lock your vehicle and not to leave keys inside, adding the area is likely to experience a further rash of car thefts.
“Modern vehicles are nearly impossible to steal without having a set of keys and securing your keys is your best defense against being a victim of crime,” Sgt. Mike Wicentowich said in a news release.
Burglars hit downtown businesses
Three downtown Trail businesses were the victims of burglaries over the weekend.
The first incident was reported Saturday in the 1300 block of Cedar Avenue.
Someone smashed a large window and stole an electric scooter from inside, although a witness found it nearby and an officer returned it to the business.
A 36-year-old Kelowna man was detained for questioning.
The second incident was Saturday in the 1400 block of Bay Avenue.
Someone smashed the glass on the front door and stole a small amount of cash from the register. The door had also been smashed in a prior incident.
The next day, police received a report of an attempted break-in to the rear door of a business in the 1400 block of Bay Avenue, the second such attempt in two weeks.
Police continue to investigate all three incidents. They are asking business owners to secure their stores, install surveillance video if feasible, and take other precautions to prevent theft like installing good lighting and not leaving cash on the premises.
“We ask the public to be vigilant and report on suspicious activity occurring in the downtown Trail core when observed,” Wicentowich said.
Prohibited driver caught without insurance
A 22-year-old Trail woman prohibited from driving was nevertheless caught driving Saturday and in a car without insurance.
Police pulled her over in the 1000 block of Victoria Avenue. She was issued a further three-month driving ban and fined over $700.
Investigation started from scratch
A rash decision resulted in the police being called.
RCMP say Sunday evening they got a complaint about a naked man near the intersection of Hazelwood Drive and Hillside Drive in Sunningdale.
They located a 36-year-old Trail man who told them he took his clothes off to scratch a rash in a highly sensitive area. He co-operated when they told him to put his clothes back on and leave. They also advised him to get medical attention for his skin condition.
“Please do not remove all your clothes in public if you are itchy. That is not how that problem is solved,” Wicentowich quipped.
