Province urging preparedness and caution as fire season ramps up

The B.C. government is urging you to be ready for whatever wildfires may come this fire season.

Emergency Management Minister Bowinn Ma said it’s important that everyone follows current restrictions.

“We need people to follow all fire bans and avoid all activity that may result in a wildfire.”

She also recommends being prepared to leave your home.

“Whether you live near an active wildfire or not I encourage all British Columbians to take 20 minutes out of your day to put together an emergency plan, including packing a grab-and-go emergency kit so you are prepared to leave immediately if you are required to evacuate.”

Forecasters are anticipating a dry June although some rain is in the forecast.

“We’re expecting a very dry June,” said lead fire weather forecaster Matt McDonald.

“We’re expecting some showers later on next week but it’s not going to be enough rainfall to alleviate these deep persistent drought conditions.’

He added that it is hard to tell what the rest of the summer will look like, but typically July and August are even hotter.

There are currently 82 active fires in B.C. and five fires of note.
