Last month was Castlegar’s warmest May

A new record average monthly temperature was set in Castlegar in May.

According to a roundup provided by the weather office at the Southeast Fire Centre, the mean temperature of 17.7 degrees was more than four degrees above normal based on records dating back to the 1960s.

Record daily high temperatures were set on the 3rd when it hit 30.1 degrees and on the 15th when it reached 32.2. The latter was the warmest temperature of the month, but fell short of the all-time local record for May of 34.5 set on May 18, 2006.

In addition, three new daily mean temperatures were set on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

Forecaster Jessie Ellis says the area also received 44 per cent more precipitation than normal: 101 millimeters of rain fell, compared to the typical 70.1 millimeters.

About a third of that, 33.8 mm, came on the 5th alone, which was a new record for that day.
