Castlegar police investigate social media threat

For the second time in a little over a month, Castlegar RCMP are investigating reports of an online threat by a teenager.

In this case, they were told Tuesday that a 15-year-old Castlegar girl threatened violence with a gun against another youth on social media.

Police say it was made after a “disturbance” among youth that occurred at an event the previous weekend. The message thread included youth from Castlegar, Trail, and Salmo.

Police have been in contact with the girl and her guardian. They determined there was no risk to any school in the area.

The Kootenay-Columbia school district shared the police news release with parents last night.

Last month, police looked into another threat made online by a Stanley Humphries student threatening to harm other students. While parents were notified, the school district did not deem the threat serious enough to close school.

However, Sgt. Monty Taylor said there is no connection between the two incidents. The first matter has been forwarded to Crown counsel to review for possible charges.
