Trail RCMP forward shooting file to Crown for charges

Police in Trail say they are forwarding charge recommendations to Crown counsel in the case of a 33-year-old Fruitvale woman who was shot in the head.

In late March, police said they were notified that a woman had been admitted to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital with a gunshot wound.

A 36-year-old Nelson man who dropped her off left the scene but police subsequently seized a vehicle from a hospital parking lot and located and arrested the man for attempted murder. After being held overnight, he was released while police continued to investigate.

At the time Sgt. Mike Wicentowich said they believed they knew what happened, but expected it would take time to collect evidence to present to prosecutors.

Wicentowich said they have now done that, although he didn’t reveal exactly what they are recommending.

“Given the circumstances, I am careful about anticipating which charges would be laid but believe it will be the proper one after Crown reviews,” he said.

He said the woman, who knew the man, continues to recover, however she is “facing challenges.”
