Bear wandering downtown Trail destroyed

A bear wandering downtown Trail has been put down.

RCMP say they were called late Monday morning to a report of the brown bear walking down the sidewalk in the 1300 block of Cedar Avenue. They followed through downtown to a behind a building in the 1000 block of Victoria Street where it stopped by a fence.

Sgt. Mike Wicentowich says officers decided to kill the bear as it posed a threat to the public. They also believed it would continue to be a nuisance as it was likely habituated to human garbage for food.

“Please make sure you maintain a respectful distance from bears if you see them in a public area,” Wicentowich said.

“Please secure your food sources and garbage as it will lure wild animals into populated areas. Competition can be fierce in the wild, and can force smaller bears into urban centers in search of food.”

Wildlife incidents can be reported to the RCMP or BC Conservation Officer Service.

(CORRECTION: Police originally said the incident happened late Monday night.)
