Online threat made toward Castlegar high school

Stanley Humphries Secondary in Castlegar remains open a day after police say the school received an online threat from a student.

They were alerted to the threat Sunday evening made through social media of violence toward the school. Police contacted the student and their parents.

Sgt. Monty Taylor said their investigation found the threat level to the school, students, and staff was low, so the school could remain open.

“These incidents are taken very seriously as the safety of our citizens is a priority,” Taylor said in a news release.

Castlegar RCMP and victim services, along with supports from the school, are present today. The matter is still under investigation.

In a letter to parents, Kootenay Columbia schools superintendent Katherine Shearer said the safety and well-being of their students, staff and families is their top priority.

“Any threat of violence in our school district is taken very seriously and we have comprehensive safety measures and protocols in place to address such situations swiftly and effectively,” she wrote.

Based on the information they received Sunday, the school district activated its community violence threat risk assessment protocol.

While it was determined there was no real threat to the school, they are continuing to work with the RCMP and the families involved.

“We understand that incidents like these can cause fear and anxiety, and we are committed to maintaining open lines of communication,” Shearer said.

“We are dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment for our students to learn and grow, and we will continue to work diligently to maintain the safety and security of our school district.

“Furthermore, we urge anyone with information or concerns about potential threats to report them immediately to law enforcement and/or school authorities.”
