A homeowner was taken to hospital for observation after a hay barn fire in Columbia Gardens.
In a news release, Capt. Ryan Smyth of Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire and Rescue said 17 firefighters from Montrose, Fruitvale, and Trail responded to the call at 1586 Columbia Gardens Road, which came in around 2:40 p.m. on Thursday. They arrived about 10 minutes later and soon had the fire under control.
They arrived to find the barn fully involved. The fire also spread to three other outbuildings, resulting in “substantial” damage.
There were no injuries to either the firefighters or five horses on the property.
The cause is under investigation.
