Salmo man involved in standoff jailed

A Salmo man who was involved in a five-hour police standoff in the Shuswap has been sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Jeffrey Dean Smith, 55, pled guilty Friday to one count of having a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He received credit for six days of time served. He’ll also be on probation for a year.

He was arrested last week in an RV Park in Malakwa. Police arrived to arrest him on outstanding warrants, but he went inside his trailer and didn’t come out until police fired tear gas. Neighbouring trailers were evacuated in the meantime.

The weapons offence he admitted occurred in Salmo on July 14, 2022.
