Nakusp RCMP find stolen property in underground bunker

Two men are facing charges and one has been sent to prison on a previous offense after Nakusp RCMP discovered an underground bunker with a cache of stolen goods.

Police say they were called to a report of a break and enter at a home in Burton last Tuesday and the theft of a Ford F350 pick-up truck.

Officers were able to locate game camera footage from the area and identify the suspects.

Two days later an officer spotted the stolen pickup at the back of the home that police say belongs to a prolific offender. Two men were arrested and a search warrant executed that revealed a “large underground bunker” where they found a “significant amount” of stolen property from this and other burglaries.

Another stolen vehicle from the Lumby area was located in the same area as the break and enter and the owner discovered some tools missing from his vehicle were among the items police discovered.

One of the two suspects was found to be in breach of a conditional sentence. Following a bail hearing he was sent to prison to serve his remaining sentence.

Police say their investigation continues but charges of break and enter and possession of stolen property will be recommended against both men.
