Nelson Fire Chief hangs up helmet

Nelson’s Fire Chief brings his 36 year career to an end Friday.

Simon Grypma first slid down the brass pole in the Queen City in 1976 as a volunteer and signed up in 1978.

He says the last thirty years has brought huge improvements for fire fighters especially regarding breathing apparatus.

Back in 1978 they had just half a dozen bottles of air between 20 personnel !

Grypma has made home fire prevention his number one priority.

He’s succeeded by new chief Len McCharles.
