Arson suspected in Rossland shed fire

RCMP say arson is suspected in a fire that burned a shed at Centennial Field in Rossland.

The blaze occurred late Saturday in the building that housed soccer equipment. While the cause has yet to be determined, police said they suspect it was set deliberately.

They’re asking anyone with any information about how the fire started or who was responsible to contact them.

Woman scammed online

Police have a novel suggestion to help you avoid being ripped off like a Rossland woman who was scammed of $300 online.

They say she was trying to buy a used kayak and sent the money electronically after the seller told her it would be delivered to her home. It never showed up.

RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich says it’s rare to recover funds sent electronically, so they recommend you verify as much information as you can before buying something online.

They say fraudsters typically communicate only through text and email. Meeting with the seller in a safe location and viewing the product is often the best way to prevent being scammed.

“A buyer can use the front parking lot of the Trail detachment as a safe meeting spot,” Wicentowich suggested. “This will likely eliminate most fraud, as fraudsters will likely not attend a physical meeting at a police station.”
