A 34-year-old mother of four has died in a head-on collision on Highway 22 north of Trail that also injured her children.
Regional fire and rescue says it happened around 5 p.m. on Saturday near Hanna Drive at Oasis. The jaws of life were quickly used to extract the woman, but she did not survive.
BC Highway Patrol Insp. Chad Badry said a northbound pick-up truck entered the oncoming lane and collided with the woman’s southbound SUV.
The children’s injuries are not life-threatening. The driver of the pick-up not hurt.
“I can only imagine what those children are going through with the loss of their mother,” he said.
Badry said they are looking for any witnesses or potential dashcam video of the driving of the pick-up before the collision.
Impairment has been ruled out, but police are still looking at other factors, he added.
AM Ford owner Dan Ashman says the woman was the wife of one his employees and was a school bus driver. As a result, school buses have been suspended in Greater Trail today.
Kootenay-Columbia schools superintendent Katherine Shearer says they have activated their critical incident response team to support affected students and staff.
“Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time,” she said.
