RDCK considering all options on rural home insurance

Talks are underway with any entity that will listen regarding spiraling rural home insurance costs.

This from RDCK Area I Director Andy Davidoff who says they are now speaking directly to the Insurance Bureau of Canada about the problem.

…but he’s not yet ready to divulge what those ideas are.

Rural homeowners have faced increased premiums since a Fire Underwriters’ Survey report found many homes are too far away from a volunteer fire hall to get a timely response.

The RDCK bitterly disputes the survey’s response time formula saying local fire crews can often cover more mileage than in built-up cities.

The RDCK also wants government to consider ICBC handling home insurance and they’re hoping Selkirk College’s Rural Development Institute can study the feasibility of a basin wide insurance scheme.
