IH ponders laundry service changes:local jobs could be at stake

Interior Health is reviewing it’s laundry services and one option being mulled over is contracting the service out to private industry.

The work is currently done by the equivalent of 100 full-time employees with the Hospital Employees Union and Nelson’s KLH is a regional laundry hub.

IH’s Lori Holloway says they need to spend about $10 million on upgrading ageing equipment and that’s not a funding priority.

She says it’s too soon to say how those public sector jobs might be impacted.

There could be about 16 jobs at stake in Nelson.

A number of years ago the local unionized staff came up with solutions to efficiency leading IH to make Nelson a regional laundry hub.
