Union leadership of Castlegar’s city employees has put the membership on a tragic course.
This from City Manager John Malcolm who calls CUPE Local 2262’s decision to escalate to full strike action a sad state of affairs not only for the community but for the workers.
The two sides are at loggerheads over job security language despite the city having not laid off a full time regular employee in 20 years.
So we asked Malcolm why they just don’t concede to the union’s request. But he explains anything added to a collective agreement is subject to interpretation and dispute.
Malcolm says non-unionized staff will cover services and says residents may experience minimal disruption with delays.
