Castlegar council sticks behind mediator in CUPE dispute

The Mayor of Castlegar isn’t denying he may have offered an olive branch to unionized city employees last week but believes his gesture was misinterpreted.

CUPE Local 2262 members feel Lawrence Chernoff implied Thursday at the All Candidates forum that he was willing to direct staff to return to the bargaining table and reach a collective agreement.

However, Chernoff says he’s open to reaching a solution and avoiding full strike action but they still support mediator’s recommendations.

The union asked Council  this week if they would accept their request to return to the bargaining table – to which Chernoff and council said no.

The union says the mediator’s recommendations do not address their concerns around job security language.
