Castlegar CUPE workers call for return to bargaining

A request by Castlegar’s unionized employees to return to the bargaining table fell on deaf ears at City Council’s regular meeting Monday night.
CUPE Local 2262 President Leford Lafayette and over 20 city workers stood up at question period and responded to what they felt was the offering of an olive branch during last week’s civic election All Candidates forum.

But mayor Lawrence Chernoff and council told Lafayette any further negotiating had to be done through the independent mediator.

The mediator previously recommended the union receive a 6.14% wage increase over 4 years with so called superior benefits.

However Lafayette says their concerns around job security language were not addressed.
