Local mine nuclear suggestion laughed off

Silly and laughable.

That’s how Hans Cunningham- the local rural director for the Ymir-Salmo area- describes talk about the old Jersey-Emerald mine being a suitable site for dumping nuclear waste.

An Ontario-based expert highlighted the mine as an ideal candidate for the purpose on his company website but there is no official endorsement.

Cunningham says there are far deeper and more stable options elsewhere in Canada and anyway, communities are invited to express interest at meetings such as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
