Celgar smell drifts to Nelson

A power failure at the Celgar pulp in Castlegar mill over the weekend coupled with a lack of air movement since then means many communities are having to put up with an offending smell.

An unusual combination of a westerly air flow without any vertical mixing means Nelson also suffered the same strong smell that has been effecting residents closer to the mill.

Environmental Manager Vanessa Benwood says the shut down meant boilers weren’t able to burn off gases although that’s now fixed.

Normal production is expected to resume later Monday.
