Older motorcyclists involved in more crashes

A West Kootenay Traffic Services officer is not surprised by a new study that suggests injury rates have doubled for older motorcycle riders in BC.

The report from UBC Okanagan found hospitalizations for males aged 45 to 74 doubled from 2001 to 2010.

Sergeant John Ferguson – who hasn’t seen the study – says a lot of older riders are buying motorbikes compared to younger people.

The study also found Kootenay-Boundary had the highest rate for hospitalizations.

Ferguson adds the best prevention for these accidents is education.
