Local tourism numbers spike

Good weather and a lack of major wildfire activity are being credited for increases in tourism to the local area.

Diana Ducs with Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism says overall visitation was up 12% for 2013 and she expects that figure will be up to 10% through this summer.

She says while the improved economy also helps many visitors were coming here to get away from wildfires elsewhere.

Ducs says there is room for further expansion of the local accommodator and tourism operator sector and a local large conference venue is one key facility that is still lacking.
