BC Sheriff Services reviewing Stevenson escape attempt

The BC Sheriff Services will be reviewing Monday’s incident involving alleged local armed robber Andrew Stevenson.

They will also review the current practices and policies surrounding the transportation of prisoners in Nelson.

Stevenson tried to escape as the Deputy Sheriff was taking him into court for a hearing.

He threw off the crutches he’s been using since his injury in April and fled before being apprehended a few blocks away.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson says all prisoners are handcuffed and placed in leg irons subject to medical conditions or other factors.

Stevenson was not  wearing leg irons.

He’s expected to face charges related to escaping lawful custody October 7th.
