Tarrys firefighter receives Governor General’s volunteer award

A member of the Tarrys Fire Department recently received a Governor General’s volunteer award for his efforts. The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers was handed out to 41 recipients from across BC in Victoria last month.

66 year-old Peter Pereversoff was of them. He’s been a volunteer firefighter for Tarry’s Fire Department for 11 years.

“I love helping people. I became a first responder and I really enjoy doing that part of it, along with the road rescue and fires and everything else and when you get a good outcome it makes you feel good.”

He says sometimes there can be two calls a day and you never know when an emergency might happen, but he’s ready to help. “I live out in Shore Acres and I have an automotive repair shop, so I’ve got a scanner going in my shop all the time. So, when there’s a call out it goes off and away I go.”

He was nominated by his oldest son who had to write an essay about him. He describes the ceremony in the province’s capitol as “wonderful.”

The Tarrys Fire Department currently needs about half a dozen volunteers and Pereversoff hopes others are inspired to sign up.

The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers website describes it as recognizing “the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields.”
