Castlegar Council Candidate: Nicole Hergert

Nicole Hergert has lived in Castlegar for four years now and says she wants to be a bigger part of the community going forward by serving on city council.

She has a Master’s Degree in community development and has been working in the sector for the past 10 to 15 years, both within Canada and overseas. She feels this experience factors into why she’s a good fit for council. “I think I have a lot to offer the council as well in terms of my understanding of systems and my ability to make decisions.  Also, just my involvement in the community means that I know the voice of a lot of people and I have the ability to talk to lots of different kinds of people and I think those are really important qualities for a city councillor.”

She says her personal platform is based on sustainability and inclusion and there’s a few main issues she wants to see happen. “Compostables is one of those; participating in a regional program for picking up compost, organic waste in our houses. And then, the push to becoming a 100 per cent renewable city by 2050. There’s a commitment that can be made and I’d like to see our city make that commitment.”

She says in terms of inclusion, continuing to make sure people are heard and that city council really makes an effort to reach those that can’t or won’t currently engage in decision making.

Hergert is originally from Calgary and moved to Castlegar from Toronto with her family.
