Excavation starts on old Ymir mine mill tailings

The excavation and transportation of the toxic tailings at the old Howard Mine near Ymir is now underway.

Dealing with the contaminated material next to the Salmo River is quite the effort as Project Manager Jonathan Croston from SNC Lavalin explains.

They’re then mixed with lime and trucked the short journey to the special engineered landfill that’s been constructed on the mine site.

Croston figures most of the work will be done early October.

There’s about 6,000 cubic metres of tailings – or the equivalent of two and a half Olympic-size swimming pools.
