Toadfest is here … but most have already migrated

The fifth edition of ToadFest will have a slight twist.

The free event goes at Summit Lake Provincial Park just South of Nakusp today between 4 pm and 7 pm and Wednesday 10 am ti 1 pm.

Summit Lake is a key breeding area for Western Toads.
Angus Glass with the Fish and Wildlife Compensation program says the extremely hot July and August resulted in the tadpoles and toadlets developing much faster than in typical years.

Normally, participants would help toadlets cross Highway 6 safely to help the population stay strong.

Western Toads are listed federally as a species “of concern” and are “vulnerable” provincially.
