Unemployment up in Kootenays

A small increase in the regional jobless rate over the last year.

Stats Canada indicates that Kootenay unemployment came in at 5.9% last month.

That compares to 5.5% in July of 2013.

The Kootenays saw a net population loss of 4,000 over that 12 month period and 6,600 people left the regional labour force.

Unemployment in June was 6.6% but Stats Canada recommends comparing year over year figures instead of month to month.

There are no specific stats for the West Kootenay only.
