Castlegar SAR advises backcountry users to pair up

Castlegar Search and Rescue worked with a number of other local SAR teams to pluck a snowmobiler out of chilly Slocan Valley backcountry over the weekend.

Operations manager Gord Ihlen says they responded to a call Friday night around 10:00 pm from Slocan Lake RCMP saying a 35-year-old Winlaw man was missing.

Ihlen says they needed more resources to find him.

They came back the next day they brought an avalanche technician to test the area and brought in a helicopter.

The missing man was found walking along a nearby road and was treated for hypothermia.

Ihlen says those using the backcountry should always have somebody with them.

Ihlen says the man was able to stay warm overnight by lighting a fire.
