Teck improvements crucial to falling lead levels

Improvements at Teck Trail Operations have helped bring down lead levels in the area.

Spokeswoman Catherine Adair says a big reason the levels are falling is the new smelter recycling plant.

She adds the smelter’s fugitive dust program has been working out nicely as well.

The annual average for lead in Trail’s air last year was 0.16 micrograms per cubic meter.

This exceeds the Trail Area Health and Environment Committee’s goal of 0.2 micrograms by 2018.

The average levels in tested children aged 6 months to 3 years was at 4 micrograms per deciliter.

That’s the lowest result to date for the community-wide average.
